What does the Democratic Party stand for -- in 30 seconds

by Del Miller

What does the Democratic Party stand for? It's a question that we are often asked and one that we often ask ourselves; and we never fail to surprise ourselves at how badly we answer it. It isn't that we don't have an answer, because we certainly do. The real problem is that we stand for many things and we never have quite the time to explain them all.

Check out the MidMObama website for ways in which you can plug into the Obama campaign and help win back the Whitehouse. Every weekend there is canvassing and other activity for voter registration. This not suit your taste or talents? There are always data entry and other volunteer activities going on at the Campaign for Change HQ, 22 S 9th St.

Campaign for Change/Obama HQ opens on 9th Street.

Crowds gathered this week for the opening of the Campaign For Change headquarters at 22 S 9th St. Obama staffers, interns and volunteers have done a great job getting this space in the same block with Sparky's and the Lakota Coffee Company. As soon as Barack Obama's picture went up in the window, folks started streaming in to connect with the campaign. On the same day as the opening here, 23 other offices opened in Counties all across Missouri. Next week, offices in the major Metro areas will be opening as well. Check out the office on 9th and volunteer. There are Canvasses and phone banks, focused currently on voter registration, going on right now!!
Senator Graham is sharing the space and others may be doing the same after the Primary on Tuesday. For more pics see the Image Gallery.

Conferences for the Democratic activist... be prepared for the Fall Campaign!

Three events are coming up this summer which will inform our campaigns to take back our State and Nation.
The National Conference on Media Reform is always great. I have attended two of them, came away each time inspired and greatly informed on the issues of media, FCC reform, access to bandwidth, Net neutrality etc. Speakers include Senator Byron Dorgan, Dan Rather, Bill Moyers, Van Jones, Amy Goodman and Robert McChesney.

Kansas City Democracy for America is hosting the DFA Campaign Training Academy this June. Many of us attended the Academy here in Columbia last April. Brush up your campaign and organizing skills and acquire new ones at this weekend training in June. This very low cost event may be the best thing you do this year to take back Missouri.

Judy Baker is a great progressive Democrat with broad appeal to independents and disaffected Republican voters. She is running against a Bush rubber stamp. Right now, she needs financial support to launch her campaign and gain National attention. One Missourian has created 100 PACs to skirt campaign finance laws

One of those folks who donated 100k to Matt Blunt, has found a novel way to skirt camapign finance laws. He has created 100 (count em...100)PACS in support of school voucher programs and other issues to reduce or eliminate Government programs. As reported in Show Me Progress:

It is a loop hole you could drive a truck thru. He is trying to buy the legislature of his choosing...one that will destroy Public Education.

Howard Dean and the DNC are promoting November 3rd as a "One Year Out" Democratic outreach day with house parties and canvasses. The Jay Nixon Campaign is teaming up with these events to help him and local Democrats get elected one year from now. They may be able to supply walk lists for One Year Out canvass efforts in your neck of the Missouri woods. Here for example, is the event I have set up in Fulton:
http://www.democrats.org/page/event/detail/4v2hg
And...here is the DNC intro page to set up an event wherever you are:

There are several houseparies and canvasses in Boone County. Seach for one at DNC and if there is not one near you...create your own!

Barack A Que draws Democrats to Flat Branch Park

Barack A Que draws Democrats to Flat Branch Park

Dozens of Democrats turned out on Saturday for BBQ and speeches in Flat Branch Park at an event sponsored by MU Students for Obama and MidMO4Obama. Judy Baker, while not yet committed to a Presidential choice, gave a great speech calling on folks like to speak up like Obama and stand up as Democrats promoting Democratic values. On Tuesday October 2nd, State Auditor Susan Montee will be at Courthouse Square at 6:00 PM, as Chair of Women for Obama, to take part in a "Turn the Page in Iraq" rally. October 2nd is the 5th anniversary of the now famous speech Obama gave opposing Bush's war plans.

Dick Cheney raising funds for Sam Graves. Republicans running scared of Kay Barnes in Missouri House District 6.

Kay Barnes, the former Mayor of Kansas City is running strong against the Bush rubber stamp Sam Graves in the 6th Congressional district just to our West. She is so strong that Dick Cheney has been called out of his undisclosed location to hold a $10,000 per plate dinner for Graves this week. In response, Kay is calling for people to contribute to her campaign to raise $50,000 thru ActBlue.

Now...we in the 9th District, have got to get a good person to run against our own rubber stamp, Kenny Hulshof. The voting record of Graves and Hulshof is almost identical in that they voted with Bush over 94% of the time. Meanwhile, I am sending what I can to Kay Barnes.

Take me out to the ball game... but first a visit to the scalper!

Rep Jeff Harris, speaking in Jefferson City before the Mid MO Democratic Club last night, updated the group on the "special session" called by boy Blunt.
Seems that Matt's brother Andy is a lobbyist for Ticket Master. The brothers pushed for the legalization of scalping. Jeff voted against it, but it did pass in the Republican controlled legislature.
Now, scalpers can buy up huge blocks of tickets to sports events and resell them at highly inflated prices. Of course this does not affect Matts rich friends who are able to afford season boxes and tickets...the very rich. For the rest of us, if you want to take your kid to the game for an afternoon, you will have to negotiate your entrance with the scalpers!
We have got to take Missouri back! Lets elect Democrats in 08!
